TruckHacks - Wheeling Rio Puerco 12 Aug 2007
Sorry, there aren't any good wheeling pics here. Of the six people who were going to go with me, nobody made it but me and it's hard to take action pics while you're in the driver's seat. :-)
Ran across a jeeper who showed me where the land bridge was to get down. I'd missed it by one turn too early. He went through Devil's Throat (according to the Google Earth KMZ a friend sent me that I imported into my GPSr, it was listed as Hogsback.) It was a tight fit for the PW, with the passenger mirror a couple inches away from the low side wall. Didn't notice till most of the way through that my oldest had stuck her hand out the window and was running her hand along the low wall as we drove through. She got a lecture after that about keeping your body parts inside the truck at all times. Next time I'll fold that mirror in just in case, but no problems. The jeeper hung out looking at all the trashed cars at the bottom of the hill and I continued on.
Drove around various places but didn't make it to any of the other waypoints my friend had sent because the girls were getting hungry. They liked the big sand dune past Hogsback though.
I didn't air down the tires because I had no way to refill them except at a gas station, but even on the sand dune there wasn't too much of a problem. No carnage except to lengthen an existing crack in the windshield by a couple inches when I hit a whoop a little too fast along a fence line I was on in the beginning because I didn't know where the land bridge was.
